According to Foxtel average audiences on Fox Footy for 2025 Opening Round lifted 29% on 2024’s Opening Round.-

  • The Opening Round clash between Sydney Swans and Hawthorn Hawks was up 35% on the Sydney Swans v Melbourne Demons first game of the season in 2024 and is the most streamed AFL season opener of all time. It was also the second most watched AFL season opener of all time. The Sydney v Hawthorn game also achieved the highest average audience ever for a sporting match on BINGE, bringing new audiences into the sport.
  • The Sunday afternoon game between GWS Giants and Collingwood Magpies rose 20% on the same match-up which was played on a Saturday night in 2024.

Season to date

According to Kayo CEO Julian Ogrin, AFL viewership on Kayo Sports is up 16 per cent year-on-year in 2025. “That’s particularly impressive considering we came off the back of a record season last year with viewing up nearly 40 per cent,” he said.

Thursday night AFL ratings on Seven are down 4.29% on average down to 647,000 per match YoY. (They are also down in total by 20% due to the season opener being cancelled due to cyclone) Average AFL reach on Thursday nights is also down 1.14% on the same time last year to 1.859m per game.

Friday Night #AFL on Seven is up 4.02% on average top 638k per broadcast, and up 24.8% in total due to an extra game. Average reach is up 3.98% to 1.891m.

In total on Seven the season is up 3.62% on average to 561k, but down 16% to 9.533m due to 4 less matches. Average BVOD is 39k – up from 0 last year.

  • 3.337m people have tuned into Sunday #AFL broadcasts on Seven this season at an average of 371,000. National broadcast matches have seen audiences of 3.093m at an average of 442,000 per game. Cant strictly be compared to Sevens Sunday coverage last year, due to changes in the tv deal (Sundays were subbed for Thursdays for the most part)
  • Total #AFL aggegated average audience for 2025 is 13.349m according to VOZ/Oztam, with the last week still to be consolidated. This is down 2.47% on 2024 (about 339k). When the cons+7 data comes in much of this will be made up. National broadcasts have an average of 555,000, up 2.3% YoY on Seven.

Round 7 – ANZAC Round

    • The 584,000 on Seven for the ANZAC Day Eve AFL match is up 2% on 2024, and below the average for the fixrture on FTA (613,000)

    • ANZAC Day AFL on Seven was watched by 838,000 – down 6% on last year.
  • Fri 25/4 – Dockers/Crows Seven 489k (BVOD 33k) Reach 1.683m

AFL on Seven in 2025 has been watched by a reported audience of 15.259m at an average of 509,000. (down 2.6% YoY) National broadcasts have beenwatched by 14.672m at an average of 564,000 (down less than 1% YoY). 7% of Sevens FTA audience is watching on 7plus at an average of 39,000, while the average reach is 1.637m.

According to Seven – Seven’s AFL has reached 9.9 million people – making it Australia’s most watched winter sport – and scored an average total TV audience of 559,100. [So it appears Seven arent counting non national broadcasts.]
