AFL Round 17 – Crowds and TV Ratings

Another big week in the AFL with both the top teams going down, and the race remaining wide open down to 13th spot.

Round 17 was attended by 311,340 people at an average of 34,593 people for the season.

Round 17 commenced with Friday nights Pies/Bombres return match in front of 81,711 people for the season. This was the 8th match this season to reach 80,000 or more, and gives Collingwood a season average of 62,374 for the season.

Sevens Friday Night Football rated 708,000 with a reach of 1.908 million. It was only the second time this year that the footy has passed 700,000. The match rated a further 316,000 on Kayo with a reach of 587,000.

Sevens Friday night Football averages 630,000 per match with an average Reach of 1.889 million.

Saturday stated with the Roos taking on the Suns at Marvel before 17,781, taking their season average to 23,621.

Over in Adelaide, Port took on the Bulldogs in front of a skeptical crowd of 31,590 , giving the Power a season average of 37,420, and Adelaide Oval 40,505 for the season.

Over East, the Cats took the Hawks to a lovely afternoon at GMBHA Stadium where 33,188 saw Hawthorn get a hiding and giving the Cats a season average of 42,253, including an average of 32,592 at GMBHA Stadium. The match wasnt shown on Seven, but rated 300,000 on Kayo, reaching an audience of 608,000.

To the North, and the Giants faced a formerly rampant Blues in front of 11,730 at Engie Stadium, giving the Giants a home average of 12,867 for the season, including an average of 12,902 at Engie Stadium (slightly more than the 12,764 average at Manuka Oval in Canberra).

Saturday night football was split between Sydney and the rest of the country, rating 559,000 on Seven with a reach of 1.755 million. Giants/Blues rated 216,000 on Kayo with a reach of 529,000.

Saturday night AFL averages 485,000 viewers for the season with an average reach of 1.573 million. Saturday afternoon averages 189,000 with a reach of 550,000 – this is generally broadcast to one or two markets.

Sundays matches started with the Dees facing the Eagles at the MCG in front of a very even 32,000 crowd which pushed the Demons season average to 34,754. The match saw the 2 millionth attendee at an AFL game this season at the MCG, where the ground average is 61,202 for 2024.

At Marvel, the Saints caught the Swans on the hop in front of 30,267 giving the Saints a season average of 29,832 and Marvel Stadium an average 32,277 for the season.

Finishing off the round and the Lions took on the Crows on Sunday evening at the Gabba in front of 30,183 fans, giving them a season average of 27,954.

Sunday afternoon football was split across all three matches and rated 478,000 on Seven with a reach of 1.51 million. The early game in Perth resulting in a 57,000 metro audience. The Saints/Swans clash averaged 112,000 in Melbourne and 68,000 in Adelaide, while the late game rated 103,000.

Sunday afternoon AFL averages 344,000 on Seven with an average reach of 1.046 million.

The AFL averages 234,000 across Foxtels streaming platforms with an average reach of 511,000, and average minutes of 38.137 million. The top 10 streams are
