AFL – Round 10, 2017
Thursday and Friday night matches both topped the million audience mark when combining national FTA and STV. Friday’s Sydney v Hawthorn clash at the SCG was the highest rating game of the round rating 616,000 metro viewers (Syd 48k, Mel 325k, Bris 33k, Adel 117k and Per 93k), 275,000 regional viewers, and 325,000 Foxtel viewers (Syd 43k, Melb 134k, Bris 23k, Adel 32k, Per 38k).
Top rating game in Sydney and Brisbane was the Friday night game on both Fox and FTA. Saturday nights Dreamtime feature between Essendon and Richmond was the highest rating game in FTA in Melbourne with 372k, but Fridays game was top rating in Melbourne on Fox. In Adelaide the top rating game on FTA was Saturday nights Fremantle clash with the Crows which drew 175,000 to channel 7, and a further 35,000 on Fox. In Perth, the honours went to Sunday afternoons West Coast v GWS match where 140,000 watched on 7, 50,000 watched in Regional WA, while a further 46,000 watched the game on Fox.
ASTRA rated Foxfooty the number 1 subscription tv channel for the 7th week in a row and 8/10 since the season began.
Total ratings for the round are estimated at 4.892 million (estimates had to be used for Sunday FTA regionals). Metro ratings for the round totalled in at 2.378 million (+8%), while Fox had 1.866m (+2%). For the season, AFL metro ratings have reached 22,108,000 (+9%), regional estimates are around 6.33m (+9%), national FTA 28.671m (+10%) and Fox 17.452m (+3%). Total ratings 46.124 million (+3%).
In the cities, Sydney average 30k on FTA (-4%) and 15k on Fox. Melbourne 336k on FTA (+19%) and 88k on Fox. Brisbane 31k on FTA (+45%) and 13k on Fox. Adelaide 127k on FTA (+30%) and 21k on Fox. Per 115k on FTA (+14%) and 29k on Fox.
For those playing at home, we believe this gives the AFL a 1.8 million lead over the NRL in total season ratings (where preason, AFL Womens and represenative matches are included) 53.5 million to 51.7 million – as we head into Origin. The lead increases to 1.944 million when consolidated ratings are included.
NRL – Round 12, 2017
Note: this round only had 4 games with Origin scheduled for Wednesday night.
Friday nights Souths v Eels clash was the top rating game of the round on FTA with 440,000 watching on Nine and GEM while a further 317,000 are estimated to have watched on regional affiliates. Saturdays New Zealand v Brisbane game took the chocolates on Fox however, with 254,000 watching on Foxleague.
The Friday game was the top rating FTA game in Sydney (240,000), while Sundays Raiders v Roosters match was top rating on FTA in Brisbane (171,000). The Friday game is estimated to have rated higher in the regionals at 317k.
Saturdays Sharks v Dogs match was a winner on Fox in Sydney with 88k, 15k preferred the Friday night game in Melbourne, Brisbane took a shine to the Broncos/Warriors gig with 65,000. All Foxtel matches in Adelaide rated the bare minimum 1,000 and Perth showed a liking for the Saturday game with 16,000 watched on Foxleague.
Total ratings for the round are estimated at 2.29 million (estimates had to be used for both regionals on Thursday and Sunday, as well as GEM on Sunday). Metro FTA rated to 832,000 (-1%), Regional 599k (-2%) and Fox 859k (-13%). For the season Metro FTA have reached 13.965 million (-8%), Regionals 9.21 million (-11%) and Fox 21.6 million (-0.98%). Total season ratings 45.922 million (-5%). Note: This figure does not include New Zealand ratings – we have almost no idea what they are with no figures since 2014.
In the cities Sydney is down -28% to an average of 197k, while Brisbane is up 3% to 162,000. GEM (combined Mel-Adel-Per) ratings average 30,000. In the regions the average is down -7% to 263,000.
On Foxtel, Sydney average 91,000, Melbourne 14,000, Brisbane 45,000, Adelaide 2,500 and Perth 6,300. Metro rates 153,000, Regional 76,000.
ASTRA has rated Foxleague the number 2 STV channel for the 7th week in a row, behind Foxfooty.
Super Rugby – Round 14, 2017
Highest rating game on Foxtel this week was the Waratahs clash with the Highlanders at 65,000.
The season average for matches featuring Australian sides is down 11% to 53,000, while the overall ratings are down 17% to 59,323.
Note: there is considerable data missing, especially for Sunday games and late Saturday games, and the averages are likely to be lower than higher than what we have here.
